Title: Automatic vs. Manual: Which do you prefer?
Post by: Anarchology on December 02, 2009, 02:46:24 AM
I know that both automatic and manual transmission cars have their strong points. Even in racing, you see difference of opinion depending on the type or racing. Personally, I like manual transmissions because they are much more fun. Me having to shift continuously coming home from work usually kept me awake if the day was long. A missed gear usually would wake anyone up.

Auto is good for the 1/4 mile when in bracket racing. It adds to consistency. Manuals are better for circuit racing. You need that extra control. Manuals are more fun, IMO.

I prefer manual's they are just more fun to me, tho when in traffic that is too slow for 2nd & too fast for 1st its annoying.

Manuals are great because you get that exta control but when I'm in stop and go traffic nothing is worse than having a manual.

My car is an auto right now. That's fine by me. Eventually I'll want a manual to have fun with but for city driving, auto is the way to go.

In my belief, manuals are the better. This may sound silly, but with a manual you actually "drive" your car, rather than just simply pushing down the gas pedal in an auto. It makes the driving experience more interactive and enjoyable. Don't get me wrong though, autos have major advantages in certain situations, but again it's all about the effort your willing to put into it. Some people like to take more part in their travels while others simply enjoy cruising in an auto, nothing wrong with either preference.

Autos are best on hills. But, I enjoy the control I have with a manual. I can downshift to hold her back; not be handcuffed to  when the transmission  feels like shifting...

Manual certainly more fun, and it seems to make your muscle car seem more muscley

Autos like the one in my 2001 Renault Scenic are sluggish and annoying, they'll only change down from 4th to 3rd up a slope after the revs have dropped by 1000 and you've lost 10km/h off your speed, but the dual-clutch/Steptronic autos in new sports cars are pretty good.

Overall, I prefer a manual, and I am yet to try a car with a flappy-paddle gearbox. I'm interested in them.

I prefer manual over automatic just about any day, not in the city though. Ive also heard manuals get better gas milage? is there any truth into this?

I love manual in any vehicle, car or ATV, but not in the city. Auto is the only way to with all the stop and go and it's not like you need the extra power to get you to work in the morning.

People with auto ATVs however I have no respect for. ATV's should always be at least semi-auto (auto-clutch).

manual all day long, its much more involving to use both hands and feet. makes you feel more part of the machine. i dont really care for how everything in new cars is automated ie: electronic throttle, traction control, active suspensions, etc... just give me old fashioned mechanical parts, not computers.

Dig it.  All that computerized nonsense will go away in an EMP pulse.  Give me a carburetor.  Plus, manuals keep you awake on a long drive; something to do...like opening the window on a winter night while crossing the Tehachapis--the chill air will keep you awake- :wow:

I think it depends on the terrain that you are in.  Someone probably posted something about this but in my opinion, if you live in the Midwest where it's relatively flat, a automatic transmission car will do.  If you live in hilly and mountainous areas you definitely need a manual car to keep the right gears in place during up and down driving, ie engine breaking

Although I prefer a manual shifting system, both of my current vehicles are automatics, as the wife never got the handle of shifting.

Automatic can actually be a lot better than manual in terms of performance, but it also costs a lot more to improve it to the same degree. If I had $ sure, but who has money these days?

The older i get, the more I enjoy autos. To many times in jersey rush hour traffic working that calf muscle in that stop and go traffic

I've had both automatic and manual; I prefer manual because it's more fun, and it also helps to counteract that problem I tend to experience of falling asleep while I'm driving.  Not really a help with highway driving but after work I would even tend to fall asleep in traffic, so having to shift is a plus for wakefulness.

I'm thinking if I get another car I might like to try out a CVT (continuously variable transmission) though.  Sounds like they give the best fuel economy?  Though I guess it would be pretty similar to driving an automatic.

Manual , until the dog gets in the way..  Wish they put 4 speeds on the column...

Autos on the tree with bench seats are best for cruising with a girl . She can slide Right Over....

I'm surprised by this because from what i've seen ( i only skimmed) i will be the first to say it but paddle shifters are hands down the best for performance of any kind. the shifting is immediate because you dont have to worry about the pedal clutch and you have complete control over what gear your in. it is honestly the best of both worlds.

that being said i FUCKING hate paddle shifters. its confusing to me. and i can't drive an automatic with out giving my passengers whiplash because i forget its an automatic. i prefer stick myself just because its what im used to. some day ill be able to drive a the paddle shifters because it is perfect for performance. i mean if it wasn't why would wrc and formula 1 use it (how ever i think formula 1 made the move to full auto gear boxes a couple years ago).

just my .02

Just rented an  automatic   to drive on my vacation.  In town, stoplights, a Dream.

On the open road, I think the auto held the  motor back. At 7300 feet,   I had trouble  doing 60 up hill. If it had a clutch,  I Know  it would have done 70.  My Mazda 323 with a 5 speed got out of  its own way!  Plus more gears for the hills.

Still, my MC with its 6 speed shifts Fast. I acually refer it in town to  a cage  with an auto.

Sow me a car hat gets 52 mpg like  my bike, I'll show you one with No Guts. The bike will do 120 (so it says!)

It depends on engine size and what the car is used for most often ie:racing, everyday use, long distance etc

Ha! I can't drive manual so I have to rely on automatic. But I hate driving. I live in a city and have probably clocked 20 hours of driving in the past 2 years. Honestly. I never drive because I either have someone else driving when I'm in the car or I'm taking a taxi or public transport.

I agree with tinfoil. When it comes to some races, automatics would be a benefit, but for the most part you can control better with the manual and never skip a beat. Come around the bend drop to second and take off.

Being from the UK, manual is the norm for me. I would choose manual over auto any day, purely for the better control and interactivity.

Manual transmission all the way. The thing is that in town with so many stoplights, more and more people switch to automatic.

I know many of you are discussing in terms of road driving, but I thought I'd give my 2 cents as an off roader, i prefer my manual tranny.. being able to utilize engine breaking without going into Lowrange or anything like that is great when the going gets rough for only short periods along a trail.  I find myself using the brake pedal far too much while wheeling in an automatic

Manual is the best, but car dealers sells less of those cars. Maybe, with time, manual transmissions will disappear. This is sad and I hate those new CVT transmissions!

I think that it is down to the sort of car you have and what you want to do with it. If you are doing long distance driving, then an automatic would be better. Around town, or you want speed, then a manual is much better. The best feeling is when you hit the sweet spot when changing gears!  :cheesy:

Some years ago I would have said manual... But with car traffic getting worse every year an automatic transmission or even better, a CVT is a necessity. Also, manual transmission does not get better fuel economy with modern cars...

Right now, I have mixed feelings:

I just rented a Ford Fiesta 1.3 L, 6 speed Auto.  I could not believe the acceleration from an automatic--from 45 to sixty in a blink. Yet, average 29.5 MPG.

My 4 speed shifts hard, is a pain in town. Burt what good is that small savings in gas (New cars have locking torque converter) and small advantage of power  with all that hassle?

The Fiesta had a manual option--button up/down. Like a paddle.

So, Best of both worlds?

However, all automatic motorcycles were dogs--2 speeds, Where are they now? Only a few scooters have autos.
