On approximately 1 August 2013, Edward Snowden left the transit zone of Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport; after being granted a one year asylum in Russia. It will now be interesting to see how long it takes for the information contained in the NSA files that Mr. Snowden possesses to become obsolete and lose their bargaining power.
According to 'The Gulag Study, U.S./Russia Joint Commission On P.O.W/M.I.A.'s', 5th edition, page 37 [please refer to http:/www.nationalalliance.org/gulag/5gulag.htm], Edward Snowden's situation may not be entirely unlike one in which a U.S.A.F. officer/pilot allegedly found himself, in the Spring of 1953, though apparently through no fault of his own; when he was forced down in N. Korea, landing with his F-86-D intact.
Stalin had the pilot immediately brought to Moscow; where he was interrogated. The U.S. officer then reportedly went on to instruct at the Monino Soviet Air Force Academy in Moscow from 1953 - 1958; where he supposedly taught 'air battle techniques' and advised the Russians on the U.S. radar assisted gun sight. Then, the pilot went off-the-radar...so to speak; probably after his tactics and technology became obsolete, and so may Mr. Snowden.
The 'cold war' is over, but Russia still remains the most advanced under-developed country in the world; hardly any place most Westerners would care to find themselves marooned.

Is he going to stay in Russia for the rest of his life? He'll never be able to go back to the US. He was brave I suppose, but mad.
